Baptized Baby

Standard

We’ve been trying to find a date to baptize Vivian since early summer.  It finally happened today, and let me tell you, she put on a performance…in the best way possible!  It was hilarious.

Pastor Ted invited the little kids to join us at the front of the church for the baptism, and Vivian thought that was a good idea, so she clapped and everyone giggled.  She clapped again right before the baptism got started, and again the congregation laughed.  I was happy that everything was off to a good start, because I was n.e.r.v.o.u.s.  She was great during the prayer and when she was actually baptized, then she turned it on.  Pastor Ted always walks down the aisle so everyone in the congregation can see the baby.  She waved and smiled the whole time.  Never made a peep, just hammed it up for everyone.  I was so proud.

After church, Mom and Dad hosted lunch, and I am forever grateful for their hard work.  It was a wonderful day, and I think Vivian enjoyed herself. Now for some pictures…

As soon as Jana put on her slip, it’s like she knew the entire day was about her.

Pastor Ted.  He baptized me (when I was 13), and now has baptized Vivian.

Standard

9 months old!

ImageVivian is in the 70th percentile for weight at 19 pounds, 14 ounces, and she is in the 75th percentile for height at 28 1/4 inches tall.

ImageBaby Eats

Vivian is still eating purees, and has about 3 meals everyday.  She seems offended by food she has to chew, so we’re slowly incorporating soft, baby-friendly foods.  She loves yogurt melts and tolerates the puffs, we just have to work on picking up chunks of actual food.

We are still nursing too.  She has milk about 4-5 times a day, depending on when and how long she naps.  It’s still going well (thankfully), and I’m enjoying our time together while it lasts.

Baby Activity

Where do I even start??  She is EVERYWHERE these days.  She is a fast crawler and pulls up on anything she can reach.  She is getting very brave and stands with little support.  We practiced standing without any help today, and she surprised me with how well she can do it by herself!

ImageImageImageImage

Image

I promise she wears clothes most of the time, but you wouldn’t know it from these pictures.

You get the idea.  We need to do a little baby-proofing, I guess.

Vivian is still able to entertain herself for a long time, which I’m thankful for.  She really enjoys her toys (and Kitty’s toys, too), and she loves to rip up magazines.  It’s amazing how interesting some paper can be to a baby.

It seems like she discovers something new everyday.  In the last few days, she has discovered the laundry room and loves to crawl around in there.

ImageShe also loves crawling up our front hallway and listening to her voice echo up the stairs.

ImageShe is still such a happy baby and gives out smiles and giggles to everyone she sees.  We continue to count ourselves lucky for having such a pleasant, happy baby who can go with the flow (most of the time).

It’s harder to summarize her activity these days because she’s doing so much and capable of so much more.  It’s also hard not to sound like a boastful, braggy mom.  Vivian is wonderful in my eyes, just like every child is to their parent.  I don’t want to come across in a “look how smart/cute/perfect my child is!!” kind of way, but that’s hard when this blog is all about her.  Anywho.  Back to how awesome my child is…

Baby Sleep

We still get up once every night, which is fine by me.  She usually wakes up to nurse sometime between 4:00-6:00 am.  I love having a little quiet time with her in the middle of the night.  She looks more and more grown up in her crib because she’s getting so big!  And she changes positions, flipping onto her side or her back without waking up.

Image

During the week, she is pretty much only taking one nap, then sleeping for 20-30 minutes on the ride home.  She will take 2 naps on the weekends.  I would guess that she averages 2-3 hours of sleep during her naps.

Baby Generally

I’ll spare you all the sappy mom comments.  I have an endless supply, but I’ll leave with some pictures from the last month instead.

Image

The Marietta Square has a free concert once every month during the summer, so we took a picnic and met some friends for the night.

Image

She loves bath time, and we use it to calm her down most nights. Her witching hour is between 7:00-9:00, but she’s usually content and quiet in the tub.

Image

Our first trip to the playground didn’t go as expected. She was terrified of the baby swing, and she wasn’t a big fan of the big swing with Mama either. It was pitiful!

6 teeth!

Standard

Had I written a blog post about my 8 month old baby, you would already know this: Vivian has 6 teeth!  Her mouth has been full of teeth for about a month now, and she looks so grown up with her new pearly whites.

After her bath tonight, we tickled our baby into giggle fits so we could capture her teeth on film.  Right now, she’s a gap-tooth kid.  We’ll see what happens when they come in completely.

ImageImageImageYou can’t see her two bottom teeth in these pictures because it’s hard to get her to open her mouth that wide.  But they’re there, I promise.  I have the teeth marks on my shoulder to prove it.

In and Out

Standard

I got a calendar for Christmas.  It hangs in Vivian’s room.  I try to write down milestones, both big and small, so we can look back one day at her first year of life.  I’m already having a hard time remembering when exactly something happens, so it is helpful to write it down.

So what’s my point?  While on maternity leave, I counted Vivian’s life in weeks.  When I got the calendar at Christmas, I went through it and wrote down her age in weeks, all the way up to her first birthday.  Today, she is 39 weeks old.  That means she has been on the outside as long as she was on the inside.

ImageThere’s so much more to report, but I’ll save it all for next week when she turns 9 MONTHS OLD.

Mama!

Standard

Vivian mastered “dada” a while ago. She says it all.the.time.

BUT TODAY, she finally said “mama”! My heart melted immediately. I’m still trying to recover. Just like everything else, she won’t necessarily say it on command, but one day! One day she will. And one day she’ll say it a million times and I’ll be so annoyed and wish I’d never taught her to say it. But today, I’m so happy to hear it. Today, I’m a puddle.

Furry Friends

Standard

Vivian is everywhere these days.  Crawling everywhere and pulling up on everything.  Digging in drawers, playing with anything that isn’t a baby toy.  Gone are the days of sitting her down and finding her in the same spot when I come back into the room.  She usually follows me into the next room.  So…I’ve been busy wrangling a baby and have been neglecting this blog.  Again.  But I had to stop in to quickly share a few pictures.

One of Vivian’s favorite non-baby toys is Kitty’s bag of treats.  This means Kitty is always close when V is playing because there is a remote chance she will open the bag and shake treats everywhere.  This has only happened once, but Kitty is persistent.

Image

Vivian playing, Kitty crossing her little claws that the bag opens.

ImageWe have been so pleased with Kitty’s reaction to this strange, tiny human crawling around our house.  She is sweet and patient and generally tolerant.  If she reacts, it’s usually gentle and out of frustration or a forceful tug of her fur.  Can’t blame her for reacting, but we are so thankful that she is sweet with our little girl.

Here are few other sweet interactions with our fur baby and Vivian:

Image

This is my favorite picture. But before you judge me for letting the cat sleep with the baby, you should know that this NEVER happens. Kitty will nap in the crib occasionally, but she always jumps out when I lay Vivian down. She must have been super comfy on Saturday when I put Vivian down for her nap, because Kitty didn’t move a muscle for an hour. Don’t worry–we would never let Kitty spend the night in the crib. This was a short weekend nap and I doubt Kitty will try to suck the life out of Vivian. How else is she going to get treats?!

Image

Those are baby bloomers on the ottoman, not undies. We aren’t that uncivilized around here.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Vivian says “Kitty” before she says “mama”.

Flashback: Harper’s 1st birthday

Standard

Why “flashback”?  Because this post is 3 months late and I’m having to go waaaay back to post it.

Harper turned one in early April and we celebrated the occasion a few weeks later with lots of her family and friends.  I look forward to the day when Vivian is old enough to really interact with Harper.  They will be such great friends!

Image

the birthday girl! She had so many friends to play with, so it was hard to snap a picture of her. Her smocked dress was the cutest.

Image

She wasn’t too sure about the crowd singing “Happy Birthday”

Image

She also wasn’t too sure about the cake. After the guests left, I’m pretty sure she went to town with the cake and enjoyed herself.

Alyson did a great job with Harper’s first birthday party…maybe I’ll hire her to plan Vivian’s!

July 4

Standard

Fourth of July was wet, raining and uneventful this year.  The parade and fireworks were canceled, so we had absolutely zero plans for the majority of the day.  It was awesome.

I woke up long before the sun to run the Peachtree Road Race, potentially in pouring rain.  As I drove into Atlanta, it was raining steadily.  But at the start line, the rain stopped and the weather was perfect for a good race.  I ran my fastest Peachtree to date, so maybe it needs to threaten to rain every year!

ImageAt home, we were lazy all day and enjoyed a day at home.  Vivian had a few outfits for July 4, so we played dress up. 🙂

Image

star spangled tutu!

Image

Aunt Allison gave us this dress in July of last year, right after we found out we were having a girl. I love seeing her in it. 🙂

And that’s about it for July 4, 2013.  Lazy, uneventful, and exactly how I wanted to spend the day.

Crib: lowered

Standard

Now that Vivian is crawling and pulling up, we decided it was time to lower her crib.  It may not seem like much, but I see it as a milestone.  She is getting so.dang.big!

Every night for the last week, I’ve found her sitting up in her crib in the middle of the night.

ImageNo thank you.  So today, the crib was lowered one notch.

Image

Image

Now Vivian just needs to get better at sleeping.  Before we went on vacation, she was sleeping through the night.  Now she wakes up at least twice.  She was also taking great naps before the beach trip…that’s a different story these days.  She is down to two naps a day, and one of those is usually fairly short (20-30 minutes) on the drive home.  Lowering her crib will make me feel better about letting her cry it out at night (go ahead and judge me).  It worked before, so I’m hoping a few nights of crying it out will help her learn to soothe herself again.  I won’t worry about her scaling the crib and falling out as much with the lowered mattress.

The three teeth that are coming in sure aren’t helping our sleeping situation, so wish us luck and sweet dreams!

6 months and 7 months

Standard

I know, I know…long overdue!  That’s the theme lately.  I have a lot of catching up to do.  Here we go…

ImageAt her 6 month checkup, Vivian weighed 17 pounds, 4 ounces and was 27 inches tall.  I don’t remember her percentiles, but she’s pretty consistent and was somewhere close to her 4-month percentiles.

Baby Eats

We introduced solid foods a few days shy of her 6-month birthday.  It only took her a couple of days to figure out the spoon and what we were trying to do.  Now she eats like a champ.  Her favorites are sweet potatoes, peaches, green beans, pears, apples, and carrots.  She isn’t a fan of peas or avocados.

Image

First time in her highchair

She’s still nursing or taking a bottle about 5 times a day and that’s all still going well.

Baby Activity

Being able to sit up has opened up a whole new world for Vivian.  She doesn’t fall over as much in the last couple of weeks, but she still topples every now and then.  She loves sitting in the floor playing with her toys, and she’s getting better at reaching for any toy she wants no matter how far away it is.

Image

Vivian and Marion sitting up (and looking like twins!)

I’m expecting Vivian to take off crawling any day now.  She gets on her knees and rocks back and forth any time she’s in the floor.  She doesn’t have the traditional crawl down-pat, but she can definitely reach any destination.  She looks more like an inchworm, which is working for her at the moment.

Image

This is the best photographic evidence of her attempt at crawling.

She still loves her jumper and goes to town whenever she’s in it–she might break it one day!

Vivian currently has 2 teeth–both on the bottom–and I can’t tell if more are on the way.  She is constantly drooling and chewing on Sophie or anything she can get her hands on, but I can’t feel anymore teeth coming in.

Image

She LOVES chewing on the straps of her highchair. It can make meals a little difficult.

I’ll do a separate post of pictures from our annual beach trip, but Vivian loved the pool and hated the ocean.  I created a redneck swimming pool in the backyard, which entertainer her for about 30 minutes (her max these days).

ImageI’m hoping to take her to the pool more often, but this works for now.

Baby Sleep

Ugh.  Three weeks ago, I would have been singing V’s praises for sleeping through the night.  That lasted a couple of weeks, then we went to the beach.  She slept terribly on vacation and hasn’t gotten back into a good routine since coming home a week ago.  It’s getting better, but she certainly isn’t sleeping through the night anymore.

ImageShe takes 2-3 naps a day, and they can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.  When she wakes up in the morning, she will entertain herself and is generally really happy.  When she wakes up from a nap, she can sometimes be a huge grump.  It is so funny to watch her wake up in the few minutes after she gets up from her nap. 🙂

Some of my favorite moments are Saturday and Sunday mornings when we bring Vivian in our room and hang out in our bed for a while.  She is so happy in the mornings!

ImageImageBaby Generally

She is so happy most of the time!  And she continues to be a very social baby.  She is (generally) well-behaved in public because she’s busy smiling at everyone around us.  Of course, there are plenty of moments when she isn’t the happiest baby, but I try to forget those times and remember all the smiles and coos.

She loves Kitty and tries to pet her all the time.  Kitty usually skirts the perimeter, staying just barely out of reach, taunting Vivian.

Her hair is getting longer and coming in a little more, and it still looks blonde most of the time and red every now and then.

I know it won’t last forever, but she is totally a Mama’s girl.  There will come a day when Grant will be her hero, and eventually she will think we are both nothing but a huge embarrassment.  For now, I’m loving it.

Image

sleeping on my chest, which never happens anymore!

And that’s where we are 7 months in to parenthood.  How about a few more pictures?

Image

Vivian’s Great Great Aunt Helen moved to Macon earlier this spring, so we paid her a visit in May while we were in town.

Image

I think V is only 5 months old in this picture…I don’t remember. Anywho, the Nealons came Georgia for a visit and we had a chance to play with Declan and older brother Connor.

Vivian turned 7 months old at the beach! She was pretty excited about it.

Not so sure about taking a picture so early in the morning.
